The elaborate, interlocking rattle was made from whittled stems of a hedgerow tree such as elm, ash, or possibly hawthorn which was then painstakingly formed into this complex interlocking pattern. The puzzle was most likely not intended as a rattle for a baby, its purpose was purely to impress with the skill and ingenuity of its creation. Neither was it intended to be taken apart as it was made when the wood was freshly cut, soft and malleable; once arranged the wood dried and hardened into permanent position. The puzzle was likely produced by a prisoner of war during the Napoleonic wars in a prisoner of war detention camp such as Norman Cross, Cambridgeshire, England. Prisoners held at Norman cross were permitted to and expected to produce item to sell twice a week at the local market or prison gate. The prisoners produced intricate toys, model ships and a variety of carved bone and wood items, some item were even commissioned by wealthy individuals.
