Antique 18th Century French Vernis Martin Billet Doux Scent Etui Rare Guilloche Design Circa 1780 Romantic Gift Idea
This exuberant love letter and perfume holder etui is a gorgeous survivor from the 1780 period. French in origin, this small luxury item was produced at one of the Paris workshops, it is decorated in a complex incised guilloche Vernis Martin finish over a cylindrical sandalwood carcass. This romantic love letter case was produced at a time of great decadence at the French aristocratic court when luxury items were in high demand. This would have been used by an aristocratic lady to exchange love letters and also hide them safely away in her gown pocket or secret box or drawer. Of course when she was reading her letter she could dab her favorite scent on her neck in anticipation of a secret rendezvous with her lover!!
Size: 5.5" (14.5 cm) by 7/8" (2.3 cm) diameter.
Condition: The orange glaze and lacquered gold foil design is so timeless, influenced by the luxury European guilloche enameling. As is often the case with the complicated multi lacquered Vernis Martin items, there are a few areas of wear. Please study the bands where the detachable containers pull away, here you will see that the decorative gilding has worn. There are three other small areas where the orange glaze has worn back to the gold foil. The lining is all complete. Sadly the original scent bottle is missing.
This billet doux saw much action. One wonders who owned it and what stories she could tell???
