Antique 1850s Polyglot Bible Book Of Common Prayer and Maps Handsome Tooled Leather Gilt Clasp Samuel Bagster And Sons English
This quality binding of “The Book Of Common Prayer” was printed for Samuel Bagster and Sons and dates to the mid-19th century, circa 1850. The book is bound in wonderful dark brown leather and features a raised five ribbed tooled leather spine, quatre foil lattice work tooled front and rear covers, to the interior marbled end papers, all gilt embossed lozenge page edges and a wonderful ornate gilt clasp which is engraved with the initials “G.W”. The book was a birthday gift to G.W from her mother; we find the owners inscription from the 24th of September 1854 on the second blank page.
The spine has the impressed title POLYGLOT BIBLE. ENGLISH VERSION COMMON PRAYER AND LV PSALMS. The title page reads: “The Book Of Common Prayer, And Administration Of The Sacraments, And Other Rites And Ceremonies Of The Church, According To The Use Of The United Church Of England And Ireland: Together With The Psalter Or Psalms Of David, Pointed As They Are To Be Sung Or Said In Churches.” “London: Printed For Samuel Bagster And Sons, No. 15, Paternoster Row:”
Measuring: 4.5” (11.5 cm) by 6.5” (16.5 cm) by 1.5” (4 cm). We particularly like the colored maps.
Condition: The book is in good condition and the clasp opens and closes perfectly. The pages are in good condition with some minor foxing. The first 16 pages are a little loose. Two of the maps have the routes highlighted in colored ink - see images. The covers are in good condition with only minor wear to the bottom right edge of the spine where there is a small tear to the leather. To the bottom left edge of the spine there is a historic glue repair to the leather.
