18th Century Silkwork Needlework Pair Rare Parrot Mouse and Ducks English Georgian Circa 1790
Having previously retailed many George III period silkworks, it is always fascinating to come across a scene or subject that is unfamiliar. We like that the diligent needleworker has juxtaposed native traditional British wildlife with the more exotic species introduced from overseas. Of course this was a period when the middle classes were inspired by the continuing exploration of far off lands and in turn their personal fashions and their interiors reflected this craze for the exotic. We think that you will agree that this stunning pair have the most appealing subject matter. Although sympathetically re-framed they will make an elegant statement within your home.
This pair of silkwork embroideries date to the late 18th century circa 1780 to 1800. Expertly wrought upon a plain woven silk ground we see an exotic parrot perched on a branch grasping a pair of delicious looking cherries in his beak. Beneath him rests a beautiful Butterfly, while a cheeky mouse has picked up a cherry pip and is ready to scuttle off back to its nest. The partner silkwork depicts an equally enchanting scene; we see an exotic Asiatic pheasant again perched in a branch. This branch hovers above a trio of mallard ducks who are busy feeding and preening on this small tuft of grass and reeds. The needleworker has used silk threads in long and short stitch to expertly convey detail and texture in both of her pictures.
Size: Parrot framed 12.5" by 10", Pheasant very slightly smaller at 12.25" by 9 7/8"
Condition: Is a little worn and reflected in our price for the pair including USA shipping. Although the coloring of the silk stitching is still perfectly strong; sadly as is so common, the silk background has some areas of melting or perishing due to the ravages of time. Please study our images for both where you can clearly see that this really is not too detrimental to their refined beauty. One small chip to bottom corner of Parrot's frame. As mentioned these new frames were added approx 20 years ago. These frames are perfectly in keeping and make this pair absolutely timeless and suitable for most interiors old or new.
