This wonderful early 19th century painted silhouette of a lady dates to the Regency era, circa 1815. The sitter has a traditional Regency period piled high hairstyle with a bow and is wearing a traditional Empire waist dress from the period. We particularly like the way that the artist has applied a darker shade of black India ink/ watercolor to convey shadow, depth and texture to the sitter’s costume. The silhouette is painted on card and is housed under its original convex glass in its original decorative frame with its original gilt metal bezel and decorative rose suspension loop.
Measuring: Frame 4 3/8” (11 cm) by 5 1/8” (13 cm). Aperture 2 2/8” (5.7 cm) by 2 6/8” (7.2 cm).
Condition: The painting is in good condition for its vast age and is free from foxing. There is some surface crazing and very minor surface marks and indentations to the frame. The backing paper has been replaced at some point; we have not examined the silhouette out of the frame.
Please stop a while and view our other silhouettes; they are an art form that we are passionate about. They look superb displayed in a grouping on a gallery wall.
