Georgian Miniature Watercolor Gouache Painting Original Pressed Brass Frame Circa 1800
This is one of our favorite antique miniature Georgian paintings of late. This exceptional little painting dates to the 1790-1800 period. It is housed within its original pressed brass frame with late 1700's wooden backing structure. Having retained its original top suspension loop this perfect package is ready to hang and admire.
The watercolor/ gouache portrait of this young country lass is phenomenal. The skill of the artist and the retained the vibrancy of the palette is quite simply breathtaking. We adore her large straw bonnet and the way that she has her linen smock ruched up and folded to reveal her deep crimson woolen skirt. The sun has appeared and she is feeling the heat on this summer's morning. She appears to be running an errand, perhaps day dreaming or dallying on her way to market. She walks barefoot carrying her basket ready to fill with fresh produce. The way that she has her hand tucked into her smock is very casual and endearing...she has not a care in the world. In her other hand she carries a small leafed twig. She stands on a patch of lush green grass with the remains of an old dry stone wall beside her. Although purchased here in England we just have a suspicion that this beautiful young lady may very well be of continental origin, maybe Swiss or French.
Size: Pressed brass frame approx 5.5" (14 cm) by 4.5" (11.5 cm) by 0.75" (2 cm). Visible watercolor 3 1/8" (8 cm) by 4" (10 cm).
Condition: The pressed brass frame is in excellent condition with a good patina and free from issues. There is old dust debris trapped under the glass, a small speck on her cheek but we have not seen the need to open this delight. The watercolor although gorgeous and absolutely unfaded; sadly, she does have damp staining to the top and right. Please study our images as it is plain to see. This was a common problem when pictures were hung from old walls where the damp would transfer. We hope that you will agree that this skillful depiction is undeniably still very beautiful and entirely worthy of display and appreciation. She is stunning.........
