Antique 18th Century Miniature Silkwork Embroidery and Miniature Gouache Saint Jerome Circa 1780 Monastery Work
A stunning silkwork embroidery with central miniature gouache that is housed under glass. Set within its original 18th century gilt composition frame. The gouache on paper, possibly vellum depicts Saint Jerome at study with a Lion in the background from whose paw, according to legend, he once drew a thorn. The flattened metal coiled border that surrounds the miniature is particularly decorative. The fine silk embroidered roses and carnations that flank the central painting are superb and typical of needlework studies from this period. Complete with original wavy glass and original unopened backing paper. Direct from France, this rare sized combination is tres magnifique and very rare indeed...when will you see another!!
Size: 7" (16.5 cm) by 4.5" (11.5 cm). This small size allowing for portability.
Condition: The silk ground is a little darkened near the top with age. The gilt composition frame has a very, very old historical chip to the base. The top anthemion leaf design has a hole through it where it has been drilled to be hung! We WOULD NOT recommend using this poorly placed hole to display this 18th century treasure, we would recommend a display stand. There is also a crack under this anthemion and a few equally ancient cracks around the frame.
