Early 18th Century Gouache Painting Holy Family Old Master Circa 1700
A stunning, all original devotional painting that was purchased in France but could equally be of Italian origin. This marvelous, small example has survived since the late 17th or very start of the 18th century and comes to you within an equally ancient frame and old bubbled glass. Of very small, portable proportions this little masterpiece is packed full of symbolic detailing and breath taking beauty. We see the Holy family at rest, Joseph holding the sacred Lily, the infant Jesus and Mary instantly recognizable dressed in blue. The hand ground lapis lazuli blue pigment is particularly vibrant. Above them we see the Holy Spirit in its traditional form of a hovering dove surrounded by gold rays. Please use the zoom function to study the magnificence of this Baroque period painting.
Size: Frame 9.5" (24 cm) by 7.75" (19.5 cm). Visible painting 7" (18 cm) by 5.25" (13 cm)
Condition: Good and sound. The painting has some fading to the red pigment (Mary's dress and the cloak of Jesus). There are some rows of horizontal creasing which would indicate to us that this painting has at some point in its distant past been rolled up - not surprising as religious unrest was rife during this period in Europe and devotional artworks were hidden away. This adds to the history and the fact that it was cherished and survived. The very early handmade painted frame is superb as its patina and coloring is to die for. At some point in the past the backing paper was replaced with old French newspaper.
