Early Palais Royal Sewing Box Casket French Cut Steel Decorated Original Mirror Early Circa 1820
We are delighted to offer this original 1810-20 period sarcophagus shaped sewing box. Although discovered here in England, this satinwood box would have originated in France from the Palais Royal shopping area of Paris. Although now an empty box without its original interior tray and contents; we think that you will agree that it is simply beautiful.
Size: 9" by 6" by 4.25" tall
The warm and mellow caramel colored wood is the eye catcher here! Combined with the typical French ebony stringing and a great patina. To the lid is a stained black border with inset cut steel jewel decoration. The gilt gesso ball feet and decorative brass swing handles are the final flourish of decorative appeal! We adore the original interior mirror complete with ageing/ blooming and of course the original Regency pink paper lining that you will find on such examples. This box has even retained the original green lining to its base.
Condition. This antique sewing box sadly is missing its key. The interior mirror has an historic crack to the bottom right corner but personally we would not replace this ancient mirror. As mentioned previously the original top lift out tray is missing. There is a small corner of ebony stringing missing to the bottom corner of the right handled side. There are some minor wear nibbles to the black ebony bottom edges. The brass handles are a very good and fitting replacement. This is a gorgeous, gorgeous box that we are sure that you will cherish.
Embracing the past with tempting antique European textiles, prints, paintings and porcelain.
