A fabulously decorative early 19th century miniature watercolor that just 'works' on all counts.
This decorative watercolor on paper profile depicts an elegant young lady and dates to the beginning of the 19th century, circa 1815. The female sitter is dressed in traditional Regency clothing, she is wearing a light blue off the shoulder dress with short puffed sleeve and natural waist line.
The watercolor is housed beneath a very unusual and gorgeous reverse painted old bubbled glass mat that was very cleverly painted to imitate the grain of expensive tortoiseshell. The 19th century frame features a wonderful Rosewood veneer and external gilt slip, complete with original rear suspension loop.
Measuring: Frame width 5.75 inch (14.5 cm) by height 6 5/8 (17 cm). Frame depth 7/8 inch (2.3 cm) . Watercolor width 2 3/8 inch (6 cm) by height 2 7/8 inch (7 cm).
Condition: As with most items of this age there are some small dust particles to the reverse of the glass. A small pin head mark to the paper seen to the left of her nose. The inner gilt oval card mount has a small dent at 9 o'clock and has been at some point re-gilded. There is some minor wear to the tortoiseshell effect glass mount. The frame and gilt slip are in good condition with a wonderful natural patina, there are some minor bumps to the frame which is to be expected.
