A superb floral arrangement Colifichet needlework from the 1810 period. Colifichet is the term for the ancient technique developed in China where both sides of the single sheet of paper/ vellum/silk are identically embroidered; each face of the paper was meticulously embroidered with none of the usual loose threads that one finds to the reverse of an embroidery. This exacting art form was particularly popular during the 18th and early 19th century in Europe. Can you imagine the patience required for sewing on to paper with the resulting images the same neatness to both sides??

Our gorgeous example was wrought on plain paper, not the laid paper (chain link paper) of earlier 18th century Colifichet examples. It has been more recently housed in an antique frame when it has been beautifully mounted with brown scalloped card and sandwiched between two sheets of glass so that one can easily view both of the embroidered faces. The reverse of the frame decorated with a very pretty paper. This combination is very pleasing indeed making it the perfect addition to a folk art inspired interior.

Size: Frame 11.5" by 9.25" by 1.25" (30 cm by 24 cm by 3 cm)

Condition: The colors are still vibrant to the silk threads. There is a small tear to the paper ground bottom right. To the reverse there is some minor thread loss to the cornucopia basket. The velvet ribbon braid is missing to three sides to the reverse. The sympathetic and naive look re-framing has been thoughtfully arranged to showcase the original needleworker's skill. This pretty Georgian treasure is ready to hang and admire from both angles.
