Regency Miniature Watercolor Portrait On Card Glorious Oval Frame Circa 1810 Georgian
This is a most splendid example of a miniature Regency portrait. The small scale, shape of the original frame and of course the beautiful sitter make for THE most perfect combination. We are left wondering who this beauty was and who painted the portrait of her. Perhaps this portrait was commissioned for her intended, as the delicacy of touch and slightly coy angle of the head would suggest a romantic liaison. A lover's gift!
Measuring 4.5" by 4.75" - the lemon gilt frame is a true delight as it has retained all of its original gilt over gesso beading. Under the old glass is an oval card mount with the oval portrait of this stunning young lady set within. The young lady wears a centre parting with a high bun to her crown and ringlets draping over the nape of her neck. A typical hairstyle of the Jane Austen period circa 1810. We adore her kind and gentle face. She stares straight at us the viewer with those large innocent blue eyes and fresh, rose pink tinted cheeks.
Condition is very good to excellent. The frame has two touch up repairs to one side of the frame, approx 2/8" wide each and not seen when on display. As one would expect with a frame of this age there is cracking to the gesso but nothing serious or in any way unstable. We have not opened this painting and so you will find trapped dust under the glass. The painting on card has fine cracking and grazing to the surface of the watercolor again to be expected with age.
This very appealing little Georgian work of art is ready to hang and cherish.
