Georgian Miniature Sepia Stipple Engraving Allegorical Lemon Gilt Frame After Bartolozzi Cipriani Circa 1790s
We can never resist such antique treasures as they display so beautifully within one's home and are absolutely timeless.
This miniature Georgian delight is housed within its original oval lemon gilt frame and set behind its old bubbled glass. The original 18th century engraving is sepia stipple engraved upon laid paper. The scene depicted is very similar to those produced by the 18th century greats - Angelica Kauffmann, Francesco Bartolozzi and Giovanni Battista Cipriani; although sadly this engraving has been historically trimmed to fit the oval, removing the title and publishers details. Having retailed works by all three of the above we are familiar with such miniature engravings.
This particular depiction is a rare one, as after much research we cannot find another example. It is certainly an allegorical depiction. The classically dressed maiden is stood beside a table laden with a large closed book, a spray of flowers, an artists palette holding four paint brushes, a stone circular mallet or perhaps a circular glass vial and a large urn. She holds a stone tablet in one hand whilst directing a ray of sunlight on to the tablet through a crystal prism with the other. Perhaps she is symbolizing the seven liberal arts (Geometry, Rhetoric, Grammar, Dialect, Arithmetic, Astronomy, Music ). An allegory of art and science, law?? A personification of the five senses or even perhaps a Masonic connection? As you can tell we have explored many options.....
Size: Frame 6.75" by 5 7/8" by 1". Sight 5" by 4.25"
Condition: The frame has received some restoration in the past; at 11 o'clock and also to the right side between 3 and 5 o'clock. It is extremely difficult to notice except by touch - it feels a little rougher. Minor wear to the outside edges as one would expect from a frame of this age. The top suspension loop is a replacement but perfectly in keeping. New backing paper is seen to the reverse.
This is a gorgeous little package that is ready to hang and admire and with world postage already included in the price ...the time to buy is the time that you see it............
