Antique Rare Mayer and Newbold Porcelain Cup And Saucer Circa 1825 Regency Era

This is a splendid porcelain delight from Regency England. Its elegance, beauty and delicately potted body combine to make this one of our most favorite cup and saucers.

This rare cup was produced by Mayer And Newbold who were Staffordshire porcelain manufactures for only a brief period between 1817 – 1833. This beautifully decorated cup and saucer would have originally been part of a much larger tea service. Both pieces are of excellent quality, the porcelain is thinly potted and has a high translucency. The cup is of London shape and features an elaborate hand painted pattern on the interior of the cup. Both pieces features extensive gilt decoration, large hand painted Roses and other flowers on a rich dark blue cobalt ground. Both pieces are unmarked which is common with Mayer and Newbold.

For an example of the shape and exterior pattern please see plate 499 and 500 in “A Compendium Of British Cups by Michael Berthoud”.

Measuring: Cup diameter with handle 4 2/8” (11 cm). Diameter without handle 3.75” (9.5 cm). Height 2 3/8” (6 cm). Saucer diameter 5.5” (14 cm).

Condition: The cup has no damage or restoration. The hand painted design is crisp and bright as is the gilding. The saucer is in very good condition the hand painted design is crisp and bright as is the gilding, the tiniest area of wear to some of the ground bits is very minor. There is a thin “Y” shape hairline on the underside of the saucer 1.5” (4 cm), it is not visible on the face of the saucer.

This is a rare opportunity to own items from an uncommon English factory, as mentioned above both pieces are of a very high quality in terms of the decoration and the wonderfully thin body. Our example has no doubt been well looked after during its vast 200 year history. This is the perfect item for anyone who collects early 19th century English porcelain.
