Antique Early 19th Century Glass Cornucopia Vase Dog Greyhound Circa 1830s

This is a decorative example of an attractive early 19th century cornucopia vase. dating to the late Georgian/ early Victorian period the wrythen glass vase features a ribbed body with a pretty ruffled rim. The vase sits within a very unusual and finely modelled ceramic greyhound mount upon a rectangular pottery base. This Greyhound mount resembles a Staffordshire stirrup cup (a type of English cup used to offer an alcoholic drink to a person upon parting, usually to a person on horseback with their feet in stirrups). Similar to the Rhyton or Libation cup used for a special communal drinking ceremony. More commonly cornucopia vases are found with rams heads or lady’s gloves as supports, a greyhound is very uncommon ( of course often associated with Diana the Huntress in ancient Roman and Greek mythology) and ideal for anyone who loves dogs. The ceramic base features gilt decoration and a wonderful blue faux marble coloring. We see this wonderful vase on your display shelf or mantle filled with your most favorite spring flowers.

Measuring: Base 3” (7.5 cm) by 5 5/8” (14 cm). Base height 1” (2.5 cm). Total height 5.75” (15 cm).

Condition: The vase is in good condition for its age with excellent naturalistic moulding to the greyhound's head. The glass is in very good condition free from any damage, the early glass has a lovely ring to it. The greyhound support has some minor restoration to the back of the head where an historic chip has been filled, repainted and re-gilded (approximately 1” or 2.5 cm). The gilding on the base is in very good condition, the glaze on the base has natural crazing throughout which is to be expected on a piece of this age.

This item is perfect for anyone who appreciates Georgian period antiques or anyone who collects dog related antiques. This item will display excellently on your mantelpiece.
