Georgian Spode Porcelain Cup Bute Shape Pattern 1020 Circa 1806
This richly decorated porcelain cup was produced by Spode in England at the beginning of the 19th century, circa 1806. When looking back at the George III period with 21st century rose tinted glasses, we all imagine the Georgian homes to be decorated in pretty pastel shades. However, quite the opposite: as the Georgian homeowner relished the idea of color. One only has to examine surviving fragments of Georgian wallpapers to bear witness to the huge range of colors that were in favor. The colors ranged from the pretty pale colors to the more luxurious yellows, greens, burnt orange, vivid electric blues and crimsons, all of course highlighted with a flourish of black or gold. The recent military campaign on the continent of Europe brought back with it the rich, ornate colorings of the French court which in turn was influenced by Napoleon Bonaparte's victories in exotic Egypt and Syria.
The shape of this cup is known as the Bute shape, the handle is the traditional Spode loop handle with single overturned kick. The Bute shape cup came into production at Spode circa 1800; this being a low pattern number in the early 1000s dates it to circa 1806. The pattern features extensive gilt decoration and floral decoration on a vibrant burnt orange ground. The base of the cup is faintly marked with the pattern number 1020.
Measuring: Diameter with handle 4” (10 cm). Diameter without handle 3 2/8” (8 cm). Height 2 3/8” (6 cm).
Condition: This cup is in very good condition for its age with no damage or restoration. The gilding is in excellent order with only very minor wear to the inside rim. The ground is bright and in very good condition. No chips, cracks or hairlines. Some very minor fritting to the footrim which is to be expected on a piece of porcelain from this early period and all adds to the charm.
This is a quality example that instantly transports one back to fashionable Georgian England.
