This small book is a first edition, with this first printing limited to only 300 copies - this book is copy 139. The book tells the story of the Royal Ordnance Factory managed by J. Lyons and Company Limited for the Ministry of Supply during the World War of 1939-1945. All 300 copies were signed by the author H. E. Bates and the illustrator Randolph Schwabe. H E Bates (16th May 1905 – 29th January 1974) was a well-known English writer and author famous for writing “The Darling Buds Of May”, “My Uncle Silas” and “Love For Lydia” and many others. Randolph Schwabe (1885 – 1948) was a distinguished British artist, a close friend of Charles Rennie Mackintosh and Francis Unwin.
This book is number 139/300 and has 50 pages. The book is printed on Millbourn Hand-made Paper by Bemrose and Sons Ltd, London and Derby. The book features black and white illustration by Schwabe, rich blue leather covers and spine and impressed gilt decoration to the front cover.
Measuring: 8 6/8” (22.3 cm) by 5 5/8” (14.5 cm) by 2/8” (0.5 cm).
The book is in good condition, some wear to the blue leather spine and some minor surface wear to the leather covers. The binding is tight. The text is in good condition and very clean with no rips or tears. There is a tiny 2/8” (0.5 cm) pen mark on the paste down and a faint 4.5” (12 cm) pen mark on the front free end paper. The front free end paper has become slightly separated from its strengthener however the page is not loose. This is a nice clean binding.
