Georgian Silkwork Embroidery Child and Dog Super Condition Circa 1790
This is a delightful example to add to your Georgian silkwork collection. This charming example depicts a Georgian child playing with their faithful dog among a beautiful landscape setting. This stunning portrait is most certainly after an original painting by Sir Joshua Reynolds. Please see his paintings of Mr Philip Yorke, or Miss price or Master Henry Hoare as The Gardener or Hon John Tufton to name but a few.....you will definitely see the resemblance. Please also see a similar example that we are retailing separately , item TA11270
The needlework is wrought up on a silk background. The silk sky, the girl's face, hands and feet are all beautifully hand painted. The needleworker has used varying stitches to convey texture. One could reach in to give that lovely dog a good old smooth. We adore the soft rolling scenery and the little boat on the lake is an unusual addition.
SIZE: The large frame 16.75" by 14.5", visible silkwork 11.75" by 9.25".
CONDITION: Housed within a lovely period gilt over gesso frame. The frame is free from touch ups or re-gilding with a good original patina. However, the upper top edge has looses to the gilt gesso to reveal the wooden frame. As this is on the top edge it is not too noticeable when on display but mentioned for accuracy. The dark grey brown board mat or mount is a later replacement, as the original glass would have had an eglomise border. However, we must say that this silkwork has been professionally remounted by a London gallery to a very high standard and the new mount allows this two hundred year old silk picture to appeal to a broader client base where it can now easily display in more modern interiors..The silk has survived well and is found in excellent condition with one 0.5" thread size flaw at 11 o'clock. very minor but again mentioned for accuracy. The silk thread has also lasted well having suffered very minimal fading.
