Our simple wooden framed example was printed on plain wove paper which was then hand colored. This original late Georgian/ early Victorian engraving is housed under its old glass with lovely air bubbles. The named scene is Courtship and this was probably once one of a pair, the other being Matrimony.

Our single Courtship example depicts a young pair of young lovers going for an afternoon stroll. The well dressed beau is keen to offer his lady assistance in stepping down from the country style. We adore the attention to detail. The costumes are so 1830 to 1840's with the puffed Gigot sleeves, wide shoulders, small waist and voluminous skirt. The large hat with lace, ribbons and floral adornments again key to this period in fashion. The fellow is also cutting a dash with his flattering narrow waisted frock coat, mustard colored silk waistcoat and high necked white stock (neck tie). We just love his dandy shoes and the hanging watch fob. Complete with publisher's details along the bottom.

John Fairburn (fl 1789-1840) was a printer and publisher of cheaper caricatures and popular prints. He also retailed and printed maps, charts and books for the more general public. He traded from this 110 Minories address in London during the last years of his publishing career 1830-40.

Size: Wooden frame 7.5" by 9.75", sight approx 6.5" by 7.5"

Condition: The frame is in good sound order and appears original albeit very plain which suits this piece. New backing tape has been added at some point in its past. There is general darkening to the old paper with two smallish areas of staining along the bottom edge.
