19th Century Watercolor By Frederik Carel Ten Kate (1822-1891) Signed And Dated 1856
We were instantly enchanted by this splendid 19th century watercolor which was very much influenced by the 18th century paintings of Watteau or Lancret. It is an exceptionally beautiful painting that has been professionally matted and framed by an expert English arts guild. It's timeless romantic theme making it the perfect artwork to display anywhere within your home.
This highly detailed and highly decorative oval watercolor on paper was painted by the well known Dutch artist Herman Frederik Carel Ten Kate. He was born in The Hague on the 16th of February 1822 and died on the 26th of March 1891. He is renowned for his oil on boards, watercolors and drawings. This bright and detailed watercolor features two Rococo lovers in their traditional 18th century dress sat among trees and foliage....please study the detail, from her striped dress, three quarter sleeves with frilled lace to her neck ribbon and the creased leather on the gent's shoes.....amazing!!. Herman Frederik Carel Ten Kate also painted a very similar version of this scene as an oil on board in 1856, that particular piece was titled “Lovers”. In that painting a lady is seen refusing the advance of an amorous gentleman. One of his other similar paintings was titled “A Back Door Visitor”. In that painting a smartly dressed gentleman can be seen talking to a woman at the window, in the background another man (her husband) can be seen approaching them. Our original example is fully signed and dated by the artist to the bottom left “HFC Ten Kate” and dated either 1850 or 1856 as it is a little tricky to decipher the last digit..
