Antique Early 19th Century Print Naval Satire Britain's Pride Circa 1820 English Sailor's Folk Art
This is a wonderful snap shot of Circa 1820 political satire in Great Britain. This all original, hand colored engraving depicts a British tar or sailor with the title underneath "Britain's Pride". This is not your usual looking sailor but a satirical depiction. We are not historians but think that it wishes to express the current state of affairs after Britain's wars against France and The Emperor Napoleon.
Please see The National Maritime Museum for the same example it has no photo displayed but the details/ publisher are the same Object Id: PA13454
Orlando Hodgson was a publisher and print seller between the dates of 1820-40. This hand colored engraving is from his early 1820 period of production when his address was London, 22 Macclesfield Street North, City Road as seen to the bottom of the plate. Housed within a contemporary black stained pine frame with exceptional natural patination and old original glass.
Size: Frame 9" by 11.75" ( 29 cm by 23 cm ) Visible engraving 5.75" by 7" (14 cm by 20 cm)
Condition: This lovely engraving is offered in all original condition. However, it is just under 200 years old and so please do not expect perfection. There is absolutely nothing too serious but please read on as we have tried to mention all points. We had to open the old wooden back as it was hanging off and took the opportunity to examine the engraving and clean the rather filthy glass. Please see images of the engraving out of the frame to view the publishing details that are not visible once back in the frame. To the front of the engraving you will see a faint pencil inscription just to the right of his head. To the reverse of the engraving is an ancient ink name JOHN LAWRENCE. This old ink inscription is just visible from the front - see between his feet. There is a faint vertical 2 " crease at 12 o'clock.
A great opportunity to own a very interesting satirical engraving from Georgian Britain. This picture works wonderfully with other British Folk Art objects from this period.
