An absolutely stunning Charles II, Stuart period, 1660s needlework or canvaswork picture that is offered in VERY good condition with GOOD coloring. This gorgeous over 300 year old needlepoint survivor was made most likely by a young girl during one of the most turbulent centuries in British history. The scene is worked upon a plain weave undyed linen ground in tent stitch and depicts Old Testament scenes from story of the Expulsion of Hagar and Ishmael by Abraham. See the same subject expressed by Lucas Van Leyden (1516), Martin De Vos (1562-63), Gerard De Jode (1585) and Jan Victors (1635). These Old testament scenes were very popular for embroiderers of the mid to late 17th century.
We see Abraham, Hagar and young Ishmael in a typical mid 17th century imagined hillocky landscape complete with the charming out of proportion insects (caterpillar and snail) and typical buildings upon the hill behind. The silk floss is worked in fine, meticulous tent stitch with areas of the hair, beard, tree trunks and water highlighted in raised, textural silk and metal wrapped coiled thread (purl).
Housed within a stunning 1870s period replacement stepped oak frame and behind glass. The frame bears label verso for Mr Morris, Powlett Road and hand written inscription "worked by Mary Capple in 1500 or thereabouts".
Size: Frame 17.5" (44.5 cm) by 14.5" (37 cm). Actual needlework 11.75" (30 cm) by 8.75" (22 cm).
Condition: Very good and sound with some fading. Some slight undualtion as it is not on a stretcher and therefore not quite now a rectangle shape, see small lined gap top left corner of frame.
