Antique Georgian Stipple Engraving Dog Fidelity Eglomise Frame English Circa 1810
We were instantly enchanted by this wonderful early 19th century engraving. Housed in its original gilt frame and behind its original bubbled, wavy eglomise glass. The title 'Fidelity' clearly seen through the vacant eglomise window. This beautiful engraving is ready to hang and is so very appealing for all of us dog lovers.
The definition of the word fidelity is "faithfulness to a person or cause, demonstrated by a continuing loyalty or support".
We see a young Regency period young girl recumbent in a woodland setting. Her trusty four legged friend nestled upon her arm. The young girl looks directly at us the viewer as if to say " I may not be able to rely on anybody else but I may always rely on my dog who will never let me down".
Size: Frame 13 7/8" by 13" by 2.25". Oval aperture 9.5" by 8".
Condition: The stipple engraving with etching detailing has retained its coloring. There is a faint old water stain edge only mark to the right third of the engraving (our studio lights emphasize it more than in natural daylight). The gilt frame has surface wear, evidence of historic touch ups and a little dulling to the gilding but nothing that one would not expect to find with a Georgian frame. The backing paper was replaced in the early 1900's as seen by the old label to the reverse. We have not opened the frame to check for the publisher's details.
