Although discovered here in England, this pretty pair of circa 1830's shoes have a retailers label inside for William Smith Brown, New York. This pair of lady's shoes are made from the softest cream kid leather. Cream shoes were made especially for evening wear (black shoes for formal daywear) or of course they could have been purchased especially for use as Wedding slippers. You will see that they have the straight brown leather slap soles with small impressed circles toe and heal. The leather soles have no heal or recognizable left or right - both soles are the same. Left and right shaped shoe soles did not arrive until after the 1850s. Our shoes have the squared vamp and square, slightly domed toes. They have butted stitched back seams, a double row closed side seam with cream silk binding decorating the top and vamp throat. The vamp is decorated cream silk bows (one a later replacement). The quarters and sock are lined in a fine white linen, the vamp is lined in a slightly coarser linen. There are the remains of sewn in elastic ties, a common feature in such shoes to prevent the shoes slipping off. PLEASE VIEW a very similar pair of cream leather wedding slippers owned by The Rhode Island Historical Society dated to 1810, item 1950.3.19
Size: 9" long, 2.25" at their widest.
Condition: As mentioned previously, one silk ribbon bow is a replacement. There are a couple of small, insect holes to each shoes. One shoe has some discoloring to the kid leather, seen on the front inner vamp and toe. This pair show signs of wear, the heal leather is a little squished but please be assured that the kid leather is sound, soft and supple and not dry and flaking. They are perfect for display as original examples from this period.
