Antique 19th Century Pair Of Painted Silhouettes of George Washington and Martha Washington Folk Art
These wonderful hand painted silhouettes on paper are of the first President of the United States George Washington (b February 22nd 1732 – d December 14th 1799) and his wife first lady Martha Washington, nee Dandridge (b June 2nd 1731 – d may 22nd 1802). Both silhouettes are housed behind glass in attractive and unusual wide wood frames with a decorative dentil border. Both silhouettes have been rather naively painted, however they are nicely detailed and combined with the frame to display excellently. Although purchased here in England, the wood is unfamiliar to us and we would not be surprised to discover that they are indeed American in origin.
Measuring: Frame 7 7/8” (20 cm) by 8.75” (22 cm). Silhouette 2 7/8” (7.5 cm) by 4” (10 cm).
Condition: The Martha Washington silhouette has some minor darkening around the edges and darkened horizontal line in the paper. Both frames are in good condition, there are some minor surface knocks. The George Washington frame has a small area of filler applied to the top right diagonal join, and some older filler applied to the bottom right and left diagonal joins. The Martha Washington frame has filler applied along the bottom right diagonal join. There is a dark stain to the top edge of the George Washington frame.
These are the perfect item for anyone with an interest in American history or someone who collect American folk art. These decoratively framed silhouettes will truly display perfectly in any home.
