Rare 18th Century Eleazar Albin Print Fieldfare Natural History of Birds Circa 1731
This scarce and highly decorative original hand colored copper engraving features a detailed study of a Fieldfare (Turdus Pilaris) by the artist Eleazar Albin. Eleazar Albin (1690 - 1742) was a professional watercolorist who specialized in insects and birds. His book “A Natural History of Birds” was the first English produced ornithology book with hand colored plates, it was published in three volumes from 1731-1738. Our example is from the first English edition of his book “A Natural History of Birds”. The engraving can be found in Volume 1, and is plate 36.
The book and the engraved plates contained within it are highly prized by collectors. The first English edition was published by Eleazar Albin and was hand colored by his daughter Elizabeth, and himself. Only 89 sets of the first volume were published, each sold by subscription. Our example is signed by his daughter Elizabeth. The engraving is printed on hand made chain-linked laid paper with plate marks and is housed under glass in an attractive light blue and gilt mount and simple gilt frame.
Measuring: Frame 13 2/8” (33.5 cm) by 11 6/8” (30 cm). Engraving 9 2/8” (23.5 cm) by 7 3/8” (19 cm).
Condition: Unopened by ourselves. The engraving is in very good condition, the paper has darkened a little and there are two very minor marks below the text in the bottom left and right corner. The frame is in good condition with some minor surface wear around the edges.
This is a stunning original engraving, it is a fantastic investment and of course a superbly decorative picture to adorn any wall.
