This scare Georgian silk work embroidery was produced in England during the late 18th century, circa 1790. During the 18th century it was very fashionable in portraiture to have your sitter dress up as a character from classical antiquity, theater or a rural inspired scene. In our needlework we see a small child frolicking with their beloved pet dog. This stunning watercolor painted and silk embroidered portrait is most certainly after an original painting by Sir Joshua Reynolds;please see his paintings of Miss Price or Master Henry Hoare as The Gardener where you will definitely see the resemblance.

Our gorgeous needlework is wrought upon a silk background with the silk sky having hand-painted watercolor clouds. The varying textures that the needleworker has achieved are quite remarkable. One can almost hear those leaves rustling. This accomplished choice of stitching technique has also been used on the little Bichon Frise or Shih Tzu breed of dog. Again one could quite easily reach in to the picture and give her gloriously full coat a good old ruffle. The child has hand-painted features and their attire has the most wonderful billowing movement. Housed within a lovely period gilt frame with gorgeous Gesso beaded decoration and original old bubbled glass.

Measuring: Frame width 12.75 inch (32 cm) by height 15.75 inch (40 cm). Frame depth 0.75 inch (2 cm). Visible silkwork measuring width 8 inch (20 cm) by height 11 inch (28 cm).

Condition: Wear commensurate with age to the antique frame. There is one bead of outer gilt Gesso decoration missing and two small inner decorated areas missing at 4 and 5 o'clock. The brown board mat or mount is a later but old replacement to replace a likely églomisé mat. The silk has survived well and is found in good SOUND condition, being free from rips or perishing. There are a few very minor age spots to the silk sky seen via our many images. For complete accuracy there is some minor undulation to the silk ground and a little misting under the glass but nothing at all serious or detrimental.
