Antique 18th Century Silkwork Embroidery Dog and Child Circa 1790 Georgian
This is a scarce depiction for a late 18th century, George III period silkwork embroidery. This is an utterly charming example of Georgian child portraiture. During the 18th century it was very fashionable in portraiture to have your sitter dress up as a character from classical antiquity, theatre or a rural inspired scene. In our silkwork we see a small child frolicking with their beloved pet dog. This stunning portrait is most certainly after an original painting by Sir Joshua Reynolds. Please see his paintings of Miss price or Master Henry Hoare as The Gardener or Hon John Tufton to name but a few.....you will definitely see the resemblance.
Size: Frame 12.75" by 15.25", visible silkwork 11" by 8".
The needlework is wrought up on a silk background. The silk sky having hand painted watercolor clouds. The varying textures that the needleworker has achieved are quite remarkable. One can almost hear those leaves rustling. This accomplished choice of stitching technique has also been used on the little Bichon Frise, or Shih Tzu breed of dog. Again one could quite easily reach in to the picture and give her gloriously full coat a good old ruffle. The child has hand painted features and their attire has such flowing, billowing movement. Very clever to capture this in silk thread!!!
Condition: Housed within a lovely period gilt frame with gorgeous gesso beaded decoration. and original old bubbled glass. The frame is free from touch ups or re-gilding and has a good original patina. There is one bead of outer gilt gesso decoration missing, see image and two small inner decorated areas missing at 4 and 5 o'clock. The brown board mat or mount is a later replacement. The silk has survived well and is found in excellent undamaged condition, free or rips or perishing. There are a few very minor age spots to the silk sky top right corner. The silk thread has also lasted well having suffered minimal fading. For complete accuracy there is some minor undulation in the silk ground but nothing at all serious or detrimental.
This is such a decorative George III period silkwork that is just ready to hang. You will adore it we know.
