Vintage French Harlequin Sugar Tongs Sugar Nips 1930
A wonderfully decorative pair of sugar nips that date from the 1920 to 1930's period. Although, they are a direct copy of a much earlier George III set of silver sugar nips.
Our 1930's example is cast in a pewter/ spelter type metal alloy that was then silver plated. The casting is very good and crisp with much wonderful detailing. We adore his belt buckle and fancy shoe buckles!! He holds a pair of hoops aloft which are designed as encircled snakes ( the sign of eternal love). Of course the harlequin was a favorite during the 18th century in France and continental Europe with roots connecting back to the comic servant role of Zanni in the commedia del arte.
Condition The silver plate has worn through over cleaning. A build up of silver cleaning fluid can be seen in the crevices. However, this has left behind a wonderful patina...this is a very tactile item.
Embracing the past with tempting antique European textiles, prints, paintings and porcelain.
