Antique Early Victorian Cut Steel Bracelet Horseshoe Circa 1840's

This is a wonderful example of antique cut steel jewelry that is brought to you from a deceased estate single owner collection of cut steel and hair jewelry...these items are ALL fresh to the market. Of timeless appeal with its simple yet elegant design, this beautiful item can safely be worn on a special occasion when it is sure to impress as it sparkles like diamonds. It will make THE perfect gift or the perfect item of antique jewelry to wear for the coming party season..

Hand making items from cut steel has a vast historical past that dates way back to the 16th century. The Woodstock area in Great Britain was known for hand producing fine quality steel scissors, buckles and watch chains. As these steel goods became popular the manufacture of smaller, more decorative necklaces, brooches seemed a natural progression for this industry. During the 18th century the British exported their steel to France and later, but after the French revolution the French started to produce their own steel for jewelry making.

The art of making cut steel jewelry was time consuming and skilled. Individual tiny steel studs were hand cut with a maximum of 15 facets. Each steel stud was then individually riveted to a metal base plate. Sometimes an extra inner metal plate was also added for strength. Production of cut steel jewelry continued in Great Britain up to the end of the 19th century. But you will find a distinct decline in quality of the mass produced, later Victorian examples, when you will be lucky to find five facets per stud on the machine stamped versions.

Our gorgeous example is of a two row design with central attached horseshoe - in all 150 cut steel jewels and of course the horseshoe has been a lucky talisman for centuries. Each multi faceted steel stud was individually riveted to the metal alloy base plate. An inner metal hard backing plate added at the time of manufacture for extra rigidity. This cut steel bracelet has its original flange clasp AND hanging safety chain.

Measuring 6.5 cm (2 5/8") by 5.5 cm (2.25") diameter by 6 mm ( 3/8"), this bracelet will fit a maximum wrist circumference of 19 cm (7.5"). This is an antique item of jewelry, we would not recommend stretching it beyond this size.

Condition is very good with just ONE missing cut steel jewel. It opens and closes with a satisfying snap. Age and damp is the enemy of cut steel - it will rust if stored in the wrong conditions ( please store your cut steel in tissue away from light and damp). This piece has been remarkably well looked after and cherished. It just sparkles endlessly.

This is a superb addition to your antique cut steel jewelry collection, please browse our other items from this same exceptional collection.
