Antique Circa 1805 Spode Porcelain Cup Pattern 893
This is fantastic example of an early Spode tea cup in the traditional Bute shape. The Bute shape came into production at Spode around 1800. The cup features a wonderful Spode type kicked handle and extensive deep gilt decoration upon a cobalt blue ground.
This pattern is known as pattern 893. Pattern number 893 indicates an early date of production circa 1805. See plate 275 in “A Compendium of British Cups by Michael Berthoud” for an example from The Berthoud Collection.
Measuring: Diameter excluding handle 3 1/8”. Diameter including handle 4”. Height 2 2/8”.
This item is in very good condition for its age, just drool over that quality buttery gilding. There is a minor line of crazing to the glaze just below the handle which is only noticeable in bright light and is incredibly minor. There is a small thin hairline across the wide of the handle where it joins the body. There is a 2/8” surface level flea bite on the inside rim of the cup which is not visible to eye and is indeed very shallow. All the points are mentioned for complete accuracy, please be assured that this cup is in excellent condition for its age.
