This early 19th century handmade nut cutter would have been used to open a Betel nut. The Betel nut is found across South East Asia and is harvested from the Areca palm. The Betel nut is a stimulant and a mind altering substance which has been used by men, women and children for hundreds of years. The nut is commonly chewed by working men in Asia to keep them awake during the long days and nights.

Our example was purchased in France and is made from hand forged steel. The scalloped top edge is particularly attractive. This piece is all original with obvious signs of usage to the cutting blade and a good warm patina.

Measuring: Length 5.5" (14 cm). Width at widest point 2" (5 cm).

This is a fine addition to your antique nut cracker collection. It also works well with antique pewter or treen.
