Georgian Miniature Card Box French Circa 1780-1820
We could not resist this scarce Georgian period delight that was purchased in France. It is only small and it is only made from paper covered card but we just love the size and the tooled decoration to the front. We wonder what the original contents were....perhaps needles, tooth picks or even a small pocket knife?
Size: 2 5/8" by 0.75" by 3/8"
This rectangular case was made from substantial card that was then covered in an equally substantial dyed paper ( that you would think was actually vellum). To the top, middle and bottom is a printed black colored border. To the center of the top and bottom half is a tooled or impressed black Pomegranate design.
Condition is excellent for its vast age. There are of course a few very minor rubs to the paper edges/ corners but nothing serious. To the reverse is the remains of an old script name - perhaps a previous owner. This box feels wonderful , just as a two hundred year old example should feel.
If you collect Georgian boxes or ephemera - this will be a fine addition to your collection, or perhaps a special gift for dolly.
