Georgian Brooch Green Foil Paste Pin Circa 1780
This is a glorious example of a Georgian period lace pin or fichu pin. This example comes in the rare circular shape and in the rare green paste with foil backings. Each of the 19 hand cut, almost tear drop shape pastes have a flat table with faceted circumference. The pastes would have been clear stones which were set in foil lined settings, the foil colored green beforehand. Each stone is set in a sterling silver closed back setting. To the interior of the inner circular shape is a fine etched gold border. It is this decorative gold border that leads us to believe that this may have started life as a stunning shoe buckle and was later converted to a pin when shoe buckles were no longer in fashion, circa 1800.
Measuring 1" in diameter.
Condition - This brooch is showing its vast age, please do not expect perfection with this piece. The paste stones have some fading to clear on one or two stones. Several of the stones are misted where damp has seeped in over the centuries. All stones are absolutely original, they are sooo closely mounted together. There is some surface wear and abrasion to the stones. The tube line C clasp works well, there is a loop for a safety chain ( sadly no safety chain remains).
