Georgian Flower Brooch Multi Colored Foil Paste Closed Back Circa 1820

This is an exquisite little survivor from the end of the Regency period that refracts the light beautifully. This teeny lace pin was once worn in a fine lace collar or fichu. It is becoming SO hard to find these genuine examples, we guarantee that you will adore this pretty treasure and think of Regency England every time you hold it. Please see a set of identical Georgian flower brooches on page 29 of Section 1 - Years 1806 -1839 of C Jeanenne Bell's book Collecting Victorian Jewelry.

This absolutely genuine and original 1820 example is constructed as a five petal flower with radiating petals in foil backed paste stones. Each stone imitates the more expensive amethyst, citrine and pink topaz. Glass paste was at its height at this period and the aristocracy in particular made it very fashionable as they would wear paste copies of their most expensive jewels. Size : 1 3/8" by 7/8" at its widest (37 mm by 22 mm)

We see two purple foil paste, two citrine foil paste and one pink foil paste stone that are all bagatelle cut and claw set. To the centre is a replacement seed pearl bead. The three elongated leaves and coiling stem are superbly detailed. Having typical closed back setting with tube hinge, C clasp and teeny folding arm on a hinge to lock the gold pin in place.... such a lovely detail. The gold is unmarked and untested and appears to us as a high 18 karat gold wash over a 15 karat rose gold body.

Condition - This is at least 195 years old and so does have signs of age and use...please DO NOT expect perfection. The two citrine colored foil stones have faded just a little where moist air has crept under the glass. As mentioned, the central seed pearl is a replacement and this is now wobbly. The pin and clasp work perfectly. There are some numbers hand engraved to the back of the closed back setting 2896 and a 5 and some scratched out letters?? Only visible under magnification.
