Antique Early 19th century Miniature Sewing Box Grand Tour Circa 1815
Charming, elegant and delightful are the three adjectives that we would use to describe this miniature Regency period treasure. Dating to the 1810 to 1820 period it is a sweet little box that would have been lovingly chosen and brought back for a mother, wife or fiancee by a traveler on the Grand Tour of Europe. The shape is very scarce as it imitates a tea caddy which of course were SOOO fashionable during this period for wealthy homeowners.
Our small 5" by 3.5" by 3" box is made of a satin wood or white wood which has had a hand painted scene painted to the oval of its lid. The scene depicts a shepherd overlooking a mountainous landscape with a large church or house on top of the hill. Beneath the scene we can just make out the words 'Le Chateau Monjardin'. The outer border imitates expensive marquetry ( which again was highly fashionable for decoration on furniture and boxes etc) with its black paper ground with gilt Acanthus leaf detailing. Thin ochre painted lines imitate actual wood inlaid stringing. The satinwood body is stained to imitate harewood, except for the rectangular surround to the oval vignette; the entire box was then highly lacquered all over. The interior has pretty pink lining paper that is so typical of sewing boxes of this period. Please see identical Spa Ware games boxes from Belgium.
Condition is a little used and worn to the exterior. The lacquer has flaked to the central oval vignette that has historically caused the under painting to be exposed and itself suffer flaking. Luckily this is only apparent on the sky area. The remainder of the surface has scratches and abrasion that is consistent with the vast age of this charming object. The hinges work perfectly and the interior is clean ready to hold your chosen treasure.
A rare little box that although aged; we feel sure will enthrall and delight the Georgian or Regency period collector.
