Antique Early 19th Century Purse Beadwork Pinchbeck Frame Circa 1815
This week we are delighted to offer a stunning selection of French antique purses, all from the 1810 to 1820 period. This wonderful example comes with excellent provenance previously belonging to a well known British pre 1820 textile collector ( name given upon purchase). We believe that together with our existing examples that you will struggle to find any shop ( outside of a museum) with a better on line selection of original and genuine antique purses and reticules ......enjoy.
This small and decorative coin purse was made to safely store one's precious gold or silver coins. It was most probably brought to England from a grand tour of Europe. The pure gold color pinchbeck frame is a work of art with its teeny encrusted floral motifs and we adore the little French house and tree design. A rare feature is the individual tiny gilt flower that ornaments the buttery gilt inner frame. This little stunner comes complete with original early push button opener, that opens and closes with a satisfying snap. Please see identical examples of this purse in The Met Museum, The Winterthur Museum and of course Candice Hern's exceptional blog on Regency Beaded Sovereign Purses ( link provided on our favorite links page)
Measuring 3.5" (4.25" including tassel) by 2.75" at its widest. Early 19th century beaded coin purses were tiny as they would be hung from a chatelaine or wrist or stored inside a reticule. They are not to be confused with later, larger Victorian examples.
Condition is good but after 200 years not perfect. The glass beads have one or two losses to each face. Their pale blue, lemon and dark brown coloring is very unusual. The purse's body has been historically re-attached to the frame using a pink silk thread. The drippingly opulent pinchbeck frame comes complete with original rear knop to hold a chatelaine suspension ring if required. The original silk purse lining has long since deteriorated exposing the netted beadwork reverse.
Embracing the past with tempting antique European textiles, prints, paintings and porcelain.
