Victorian Aide Memoir Note Book Rare Printed Cover English Circa 1880
This is a very sweet and unusual note book for the collector. Dating to the 1880 period the fabric cover has a very detailed printed image front and back. To the front we see a young servant girl with water pitcher and tray of bread. To the reverse a young boy with umbrella over one shoulder and back pack. He seems to be pretending to be a soldier and unusually he appears to only have one arm. We did wonder if this little notebook was maybe sold on behalf of convalescing soldiers - Anglo Zulu War/ Boer War??? Just a thought......
Inside the fabric cover is a paper notebook with many pages of script. The entries are dated from 1879 through to the 1920's, the pages contain notes on crochet, knitted lace etc. The book appears to have belonged to a Miss Burns of Edinburgh in 1879, her calling card is tucked inside a front pocket. Also, found in the front and back inner pockets are old newspaper cuttings and two samples of Picot lace edging. If you rotate the book and turn to the back you will find a list of senior students and some recipes. Perhaps Miss Burns was a school teacher??
Size: 4.75" by 3"
Condition - This is a very old survivor which has been well used. The front fabric covers are darkened with age with a few light soil marks. The decorative stitched seem to the outer edges has worn in places, more so to the back cover. There would have been a inner, slightly rubberized lining that has flaked and perished over the past century. There is an old wood worm hole to the top of the back cover. The inner notebook has retained its lilac silk thread securer that holds it in place.
