Antique French Silk Reticule Purse Mirror Base Metal Lace Circa 1880
This is a very pretty French concoction from the last quarter of the nineteenth century. It incorporates all of those decorative elements that one has come to know, love and expect of a tiny French treasure. It is so dinky it may very well be suitable for a larger French fashion doll.
It measures approx 3" high with a base diameter of 2.5".
The design is very unusual, almost Chinese Lantern like which would fit in with the date when all things oriental and Chinoiserie were once again in vogue. The body of the purse/ bag is made from Peach colored silk. We see a drawstring top with pretty gold metal lace border to the upper frill. Half way down the body is a silk floral braiding which joins the Peach silk frill ( again with gold metal lace border). The base of this purse is so gorgeous with its tiny, vertical silk pleats with gold lave edging. One lifts the purse to reveal its original mirrored base.
Condition - This item has been used and does have some signs of wear/age. The holes to which the pull cord is threaded through are a little worn/ stretched and the top silk frill does have some stress holes/ perishing to the silk through hanging by the pull cord. The silk frill half way up has a few missing stitches ( an easy fix for a competent needleworker). The original, circular mirror base has some distress areas from damp but only what one would expect through age. The mirror is perfectly usable. The Peach colored silk body is in good strong order with no rips or perishing. The gold metal lace has darkening with age.
We have padded the inside for photographing.
