Antique French Scent Casket Perfume Caddy Grand Tour Views of Paris Circa 1850
Exuding French decorative opulence; this little perfume casket is a delightful find. Dating to the 1830-50 period and most likely purchased in the high end Palais Royal area of Paris by a wealthy tourist. This leather clad casket although small, certainly incorporates a plethora of sheer luxury with just a hint of faded grandeur.
Measuring 4.5" by 3.5" by just under 3".
The wooden body is covered in a pale tan, very fine grade leather. This little treasure maintains all of its original outer furniture - 8 gilt brackets with mother of pearl centers. Gilt ormolu inner borders, push button opener and all gilt corner, edge buttons and four original gilt bun feet. The top carrying handle is made from double leather straps with a plaited leather middle. One pushes the opening button to reveal the interior. We see a champagne colored water mark taffeta lid lining. Two gilt collared glass scent bottles with ornate chasing, engraving and rope twist decoration. Each scent bottle having a hand painted watercolor miniature scene of Paris to the lid. the lids open to reveal their original glass stoppers!! Housed under glass we see a depiction of The Tuileries with tricolor flag flying and The Tuilerie Gardens with the Luxor Obelisk (Obélisque de Luxor), an 3000 year old antiquity that originally stood outside the Luxor Temple, Egypt but was gifted to the French in 1833. Each glass bottle sits within its own individual card holder with velvet outer.
Condition - The leather covering has some surface wear to the edges and corners and a faint white scuff to the middle left ( seen on images). There are a couple of very small hairlines to two of the mother of pearl centers on the back gilt brackets. This case opens and closes well with a satisfying snap. The silk taffeta lining to the lid has some perishing near the hinge. The watercolors are in very good, bright condition with just a teeny 1/8" surface scratch to the glass ( very minimal). The gilding is bright and buttery and to have the original, undamaged glass stoppers is amazing.
