Antique 18th Century Needlework Picture Pair Circa 1790
We are thrilled to be able to offer for your delectation this matching PAIR of rare George III period needlework embroideries. This wonderful pair date from the last quarter of the 18th century, 1775-1790 when this type of needlework embroidery was popular for a limited period in England. See page 28 Embroidered Georgian Pictures ( 1994) by Margaret Swain for a floral example.
Wrought in England, the scenes depicted are quite charming being very popular subjects for engravings and needleworks at this period. We see oval depictions of Princess Erminia from the epic 16th century poem Jerusalem Delivered by Torquato Tasso that was re-popularized over the centuries in the forms of operas, plays and paintings. The other matching oval depicts the very popular Angelica Kauffmann painting of 'Poor Maria of Moulines' with her dog Sylvio from Laurence Sterne's 1768 novel 'A Sentimental Journey Through France and Italy'.
Each 12" by 10" embroidery is worked on a felt ground (but not felt in the modern sense, this is actually an 18th century version, a woven wool pile fabric). Separate felt applique are then attached and over embroidered in wool threads. The finished piece therefore has a slightly three dimensional effect which is utterly charming in every way. The tree foliage, bushes and animal coats all have some lovely textural qualities.
Both needlework's are housed within their original period oval frames, although each frame has historically been re-painted in gilt to their front edge; we would say this was a later 19th century touch. Both pictures have retained their original old wavy glass with air hole inclusions. Frames measures 12 5/8" by 10 6/8".
Condition - The needleworks are in very good condition being free from holes, tears, or repairs. The only point to mention is that there is some minor fading where the vegetable dyes used to dye the wool felt fabric have faded over the years. The frames have been gilded in the distant past, they were probably originally just wood. The outer edges of the frames have received some filled repairs to their cracks. Oval and circular frames are notorious for cracking but this is not evident from the front when on display. One reverse has had a new hanger added as seen on the images and we have taped the reverse for secure transit.
