Antique 19th Century Small Dressing Mirror English Delicious
Who can resist this elegant and functional antique swivel mirror. Dating from the 19th century and originating from England, this period piece of furniture is just as functional now as it was back then and guess what, it will probably still be just as functional in another 100 years time. When you are looking in to this looking glass to apply your make up or arrange your hair, just wonder who else has looked in to it over the centuries...this is why we love antiques.
In England, we call such an item a toilet mirror - the definition of such an item being that it was a small framed mirror that either stood on its own stand or as part of a small set of drawers. The toilet mirror would then be placed on top of a chest of drawers or dresser to be used daily as a looking glass.
Our refined example has the most elegant shield shaped mirror plate with mahogany border and boxwood stringing. The elegant legs have simple, carved decoration that echoes those found on the central stretcher. The mirror plate appears to be original as signs of foxing/ mottling can be seen to the inner surface. Also signs of a slight inner bloom when held in a certain light. This is purely a by product of the cold, damp English atmosphere which has been trapped under the mirror glass over time. This beauty also has its original metal locking pins to each side that twist to unlock the mirror and tighten to lock it in position.
Measuring 13.5" high by 11" wide by 5.25" deep.
Condition is very good but not perfect. It is not apparent but there are a couple of old glue repairs to the left and right side of the front central stretcher. To the top right corner of the mahogany shield border, there is a pin head sized area of boxwood stringing missing, also a 0.5" horizontal crack to the mahogany veneer and if you slacken the swivel mirror to view the outer edge on this same side, again there is evidence of old glue. All of these points are very small; this item is strong and free of wobbles. The swivel mechanism works perfectly and this object looks the epitome of elegance.
