This highly decorative black and gold lacquered panel has been framed as one within a single black frame (although there are two rectangular panels within). They date from the mid-19th century and were once part of a larger Japanese cabinet or incense box. Depicting red crowned crane birds with red Hiramki-e lacquered caps upon a black lacquer ground with Nashiyi decoration. This decorative framed set are a true decorator's piece.
Measuring: Frame width 9 inch (23 cm) by height 7.25 inch (18.5 cm). Frame depth 0.75 inch (2 cm). Aperture width 6.75 inch (17 cm) by height 5 inch (13 cm).
Condition: There is some deterioration to the gold leaf with some gold foil flaking or wrinkling on some of the decorative border motifs. Small section of touch up to the two lower birds. A slight wobble to the glass and some minor surface wear to the outer frame commensurate with age.
