This is a stunning example of English pearlware that was made in the Staffordshire area of England during the 1830s. This childs plate design is catalogued in a book by Noel Riley called The History of Children's China 1790-1890, the chapter called Piety and Virtue page 241, example 964.
This octagonal shape is particularly pleasing with its purple lustre rope twist edge and raised, moulded floral border. To the center of the plate is a black under glaze transfer design of the Old Testament story of Elijah Fed By Ravens.
Measuring length 16.5 cm, width 16.5 cm
Condition: This plate is in very good condition. The design is wonderfully crisp with vibrant cold painted polychrome enamel over decoration. The cobalt blue of his cloak is particularly striking. One tiny pin size dot where the glaze had not adhered on the front of the plate. Natural crazing to the glaze. Small shallow 4 mm chip to the foot rim, very minor.
