Antique Circa 1820 Velvet Choker Cut Steel Beadwork RARE
We are pleased to have discovered this scarce, original velvet choker form the beginning of the 19th century. It is ancient and by no means perfect but to have an original choker from this age is so exciting.......
Of course ribbon chokers worn as a fashion accessory have been popular in many cultures throughout antiquity. The fashion was popular at the end of the 18th century when the French Revolution introduced the macabre fashion of wearing a red silk ribbon around one's neck, if you were lucky enough to escape the guillotine!! Regency and Georgian ladies also liked to wear a ribbon with perhaps a small cross or cut steel adornment. Please see this fashion worn by Natalie Dormer as Lady Seymour Worsley in the recent BBC adaptation of the book by Hallie Rubenhold The Scandalous Lady W.
Our black velvet choker is adorned with a trailing floral design. We see this same design repeated three times. A five petaled rose type flower with small buds and leaves. Each petal and each bud filled with either a small pearl or two milky white glass beads. The original black ( now faded to a green hue) silk reverse lining remains, so too the remains of the silk ribbon securing tie.
Measuring 14.25" by 1.25". PLEASE NOTE that as this is an original 19th century item it is SMALL, our human proportions have grown over the past century.
Condition - This is by no means pristine. This choker has been loved and worn. It does have some issues but with some tlc it could be worn for a special event as the velvet ground and silk backing are sturdy. As you can see from our close up images some steel beads have rusted a little with age/ damp English weather conditions!! Not too bad only approx 2 % of the total. Most of the original pearls have been damaged or lost. The silk securing ties have been re-attached/ re-secured many a time by the looks of the over sewing and would need lengthening for wear. There is some slight untidiness to the ribbon edges wear the silk lining has been attached, some of the original attaching threads have split with age. There is one area of silk perishing to the silk lining.
However, it is still a lovely, lovely item that one cannot help place around one's neck and imagine the dances and balls that it has witnessed. It would come alive in the evening by candlelight!!!
