This is one of the finest examples of an early Georgian period floral silkwork embroidery that we have seen. This wonderful silkwork dates from the 1760 to 1780 period and we just marvel at the immaculately executed stitching in this minute scale....this was an expert needleworker who wrought this composition.
The silk needlework features an array of vibrant flowers in dazzling full bloom that are all rising from an elegant early Georgian period basket. We can identify cornflowers, carnations and honeysuckle too name but a few. Two insects can be seen at the top and bottom of the arrangement; they are busily looking for sweet nectar. The basket rests upon a striped grassy tump. Worked in many colored threads upon a plain woven silk ground; this really is a beautiful arrangement and the colors have hardly faded from their original vibrancy.
We have seen similar samplers with the floral basket designs that have originated from the Delaware needlework schools in America. This piece would perfectly complement any Delaware Valley collection.
Measuring: Frame width 14.75 inch (37 cm) by height 14.25 inch (36 cm). Frame depth 1.25 inch (3 cm). The inner silkwork sight measuring width 10 inch (25 cm) by height 9.5 inch (24 cm).
Condition: The silkwork is housed behind glass in a sound and sturdy dark wood frame (see last image taken in natural daylight). The inner gilded sand decorated mount has dulled over time. The original old bubbled glass remains. The silk embroidered threads retain their vibrant coloring, although the silk ground is a little darker in natural daylight than our studio images show. There is some slight perishing to the silk ground at 11 o'clock and 4 o'clock but very minimal. To the left side of the silk ground are some historic darkened patches (three horizontal bars), probably damp transference from old English walls and some minor trapped dust/debris.
