Antique Circa 1830 Portrait English School Oil On Panel Beautiful
This is such a pretty painting from the 1825 -1835 period. This period was known as the Romantic Era throughout fashion, music, art and literature. A period when freedom of expression, imagination, feelings and creativity were to be valued and encouraged.
This alluring painting depicts a young lady sitter who is adorned in her favorite day dress, poised in a dreamy/ romantic pose looking straight out at the viewer. She is dressed in typical attire for the period, including her center parted hair which is elaborately curled to frame her pretty face and her upswept bun on the top of her head reflects a hark back to antiquity and a Grecian influence.. She wears a frilled pelerine collar with blue silk tie. This type of perlerine gave the wearer a higher degree of modesty as the fashion for low, wide dropped shoulders left much flesh exposed!! She wears a matching blue silk sash around her natural waistline. Her sleeves are the pièce de résistance, as they reflect the height of fashion. This was a period when sleeves were at their largest EVER. Her Leg O' Mutton or Gigot sleeves are voluminous and stay this way until they reach her delicate wrists, thankfully once here they do taper slightly. You will notice that on one wrist she wears a beautiful cuff bracelet ( see one that we have in stock item TA10650). To complete this gorgeous vision of beauty she has a shawl draped over her arm. The fashion during this period for wide shoulders, sleeves and skirts all helped to emphasize a lady's tiny waist. However, this bulk of fabric made wearing an over coat very restricting, hence the solution of wearing a softly draped shawl.
This little picture is painted beautifully. It was not painted by a grand master but equally it is certainly not naive. Her face is just beautiful, dare we say almost divine. Her eyes and straight nose having just a touch of Byzantine devotional paintings. We really cannot fault the execution in any way, perfectly balanced with colors perfectly coordinating.
The frame measures 10.75" by 9.25". The inner painting on board panel measures a visible 8" by 6.5"
The 19th century wooden frame with its faux rosewood veneer decoration has some surface scratches and minor knocks to the edges and corners. The 19th century glass is wavy and bubbled, just how we like it. The inner gilt slip under the glass is all original. We have put a sheet of new backing paper and new securing tape to the rear as it was a little scruffy and wobbly. It is now ready to hang and captivate one.........
