We are excited to be able to offer for your period home this RARE, hand colored, satirical mezzotint engraving. The mezzotint method of engraving allowed for a smooth, pastel like finish. Entitled " Miss Returning From A Visit Or Thomas Fording A Brook With His Mistress". This original 1774 publication was printed for Printed for R. Sayer & J. Bennett No. 53 Fleet Street as the act directs 20 August 1774. It has been trimmed within its plate marks and is offered, slightly later framed and glazed in a contemporary frame with its original wavy, bubbled glass. If you adore Georgian hand colored engravings, 18th century life or indeed Georgian costume/ fashion (see those stunning red shoes) well....this IS the picture for you. Please see an identical non colored example in Yale University Library and a hand colored example in The British Museum.

This depiction could be viewed as a very helpful, respectable gentleman called Thomas helping this poor, young maiden across the stream. Or - it could be seen as a very naughty depiction of Thomas, a well dressed, middle aged Georgian gentleman crossing a ford (stream) with a much younger lady, sat astride his shoulders. This is hinted in the title as being his mistress. This risque image depicts the lady in a very unladylike manner, showing her stockings and ankles. She is shown holding his powdered wig, en queue (pig tail) in a suggestive manner!!! You can choose which version makes you smile the most!!!The detail is superb; one can study the costume and hairstyles and one truly gets a sense of the Georgian, wicked sense of humor.

SIZE: 12.75" by 9.7/8" (UK size 32.5 cm by 24.5 cm).

CONDITION - This original mezzotint engraving has been a favorite over the centuries and one can easily see why. The bright coloring has faded a little There is some rippling to the paper with some slight horizontal creasing to the paint. There is a 4.25" surface scratch to the image across Thomas' knees. Some minor flaking to the ford (stream). The title and printers details have been trimmed away and only the title can be seen historically attached at the bottom ( the printers details may very well be hidden under the frame). Dust and grime is trapped under the glass in the very corners. We have taped the reverse for transit.
