We are pleased to offer this rare pair of early 19th century folk art Theorem stenciled paintings upon a beige wool broadcloth ground. They are an unusual pair because they are exactly the same; this fits in perfectly with the Georgian's love of symmetry. They would have been created by a Georgian lady to adorn an alcove either side of her main fireplace.

Our matching pair are each absolutely original, offered on their original wood stretchers housed within their original wood veneer frames with inner gilt slips. They are not glazed and never have been. We can tell by the two little holes to the one Theorem's where sparks have flown and splattered on to the surface from an open fire. This same Theorem also has some white build up to the painted surface, again perhaps a paint reaction to heat from a fire.

Measuring: Frame width 16 inch (40 cm) by height 17.75 inch (45 cm). Frame depth 0.75 inch (2 cm) Visible theorem measuring width 12 inch (30 cm) by height 13.75 inch (35 cm).

Condition is good for their nearly 200 years of age but not pristine. The wool ground would have started life as a cream color and has darkened with age. As mentioned above, one Theorem having a couple of open fire spark holes, Verdigris build up to the stenciling and its partner has a small 0.75 inch flake of wood veneer missing to the front of its frame at 11 o clock (hardly noticeable). There are a few small minor flakes of veneer missing around the outside edges of the frames. We have secured their backs as the backing paper was rather raggedy when we purchased them. They are secure and ready to hang now.
