A scarce opportunity to own a wonderful survivor from three centuries ago with fine provenance. This rare panel was purchased from an English deceased estate. The previous owners were a well respected English antique dealer husband and wife team who traded from their antique shop during the 1960s to 1990's. They bought from some of the best English collections. They purchased this panel and one other small velvet fragment from the Mentmore Towers sale back in 1977. We include their saved English Daily Mail newspaper article of May 19th 1977 reporting on the Mentmore 'sale of the century' that was stored with this velvet fragment.
The fascinating Mentmore Towers was a huge English country estate, the home of the banking dynasty, the Mayer De Rothschild family (the house used in many Hollywood films - Brazil, Eyes Wide Shut, Batman Begins). When the 6th Earl died in 1973 he left 9 million pounds, the British government wanted 4 million pounds in death duty from his family. To cut a long story short, eventually the family sold the entire estate and contents in May 1977. Sotheby's sold the house's vast contents. The auction spanned a week and a half and raised over 6 million pounds.
This Finest, light weight raspberry color Venetian velvet panel dates from late 16th century, early 17th century. The fabric is very fine in weight and yet very complex in design, it feels exquisite to the touch. The jewel tone raspberry color is to die for. The symmetrical pattern incorporates carnation flowers and pomegranate heads surrounded by strapwork designs, a popular design during the Renaissance. The once gold wrapped brocade threads are now darkened through age and show as a bronze shade. Both selvage edges are retained. Each selvage is striped in five rows, red, green, beige, green and beige.
SIZE: Width 23.25 inches (59 cm) including selvage x 27.5 inches (70 cm) long. Images taken in natural daylight to show the lush coloring.
Condition: Good with a couple of small areas of shredding. A line of black stitching either side of the selvage. A slight, old central vertical fold to the panel from an old storage method. We hasten to add this rare panel has been stored rolled by ourselves, and will be shipped rolled.
This is a wonderfully sumptuous panel that would have been pure luxury back in the 1600s. It will make a worthy addition to any distinguished textile collection.
